Faroozin' in the oficemoo

I have a question for those of you who use word verification on your comments. Why?

I'm curious to know if many of you have had problems with spam-type comments. Where do they come from and how many have you gotten? Is this a big problem? I have never turned this on in my settings and have never had any problems. Maybe this is because my blog is new and not very well known or because it doesn't trigger the spammers for some other reason. I wonder about this every time I type in one of those nonsense words, so just thought I'd ask.

Begin rant ..

I've wondered about the same thing for a long time. Now that Google owns Blogger spam seems to be gone. I haven't had a single spam post since I started mt blog in January.

I just set it so I am emailed every comment and even if someone tries to sneak such a comment in the back end of my blog, one click and it' gone forever.

What I absolutely HATE is when I write a message and am then met with the note that my comment will be posted if and when the blog owner decides it's worthy. I realize a handful of people have legitimate reasons for that, but I still hate it.

I know people don't mean it as such, but moderation always feels insulting. People who comment on blogs almost always do so because they know most blog owners like feedback and not because they are seeking attention. If someone is kind enough to comment on my blog, I don't want to tell them each time that I'll allow it to be published once I decide whether they are worthy of such a "reward."

I went back a couple days ago to a site like that and it still showed 0 comments 48 hours after I took the time to post a very positive comment. I'm sure the blog owners are either away or just haven't bothered to check their comments yet. They will probably allow all the comments on their current post at the same time they put up their newest post.

Needless to say, that's the last time I'll bother. But I figure that's what they prefer anyway because if they wanted comments they would make their blog comment friendly.

End rant ... LOL.

I forgot to mention that the thing that bugs me the most about comment moderation is that it isn't needed to moderate comments. I can moderate any comment I find offensive by clicking the trash can icon. Nobody will ever know the comment was there.

I wonder what so many people fear (again, I'm not talking about those with real and good reasons for it - I know there are some very good reasons but those are based on individual circumstances) about someone disagreeing with something they wrote or not liking it.

If criticism is such a frightening thing, it still only takes a few seconds to delete the comment. How many people will even see it before that?

The vast majority of blog readers never even look at comments and other than a handful of blogs, there isn't a lot of concern about dozens of readers showing up to read the blog in the couple of minutes it takes to delete the comment.

It's probably just me, but I'd think even the most sensitive person would rather risk one or two readers seeing an unpleasant comment once in a blue moon than to alienate many people who comment on blogs. Moderating comments doesn't prevent anyone from reading comments they don't like. All it does is prevent the chance that someone else might see them before you can delete them.

I am in no way insulting anyone who moderates comments. That is everyone's right and some of my favorite people around here do it and it doesn't change how I feel about them. I just want to let people know that some people do find it a less than pleasant experience because it's possible that they might not have ever thought of it before and it might make a difference to them to know. :)

I also find the word verification a pain. I usually seem to get them wrong and have to redo it. I've been blogging for three years and in all that time I have only had a handful of span comments. I don't think you'll have any problems.

Hugs,
PK

PK, I'm still curious - are spam comments mass produced by computers? Are they ads? Or are they just nasty comments by morons? Meow

I'd like to but I'm just too shy to do that. :)

I'm not a fan of word verification, same as PK, sometimes you can't read them, get them wrong and have to type a new one.
Sorry Meow, I'm not sure where they come from. I've been blogging for nearly a year and not had a spam comment. If somebody lets you know please share, I would be very interested.

Meow, The only one I have gotten have been like advertisements. I'll see the same comment on several blogs like "I love your blog. Come by and check mine out and we can exchange links." Then it takes you to some pay spanko site. There pretty easy to ignore.

Meow,
I am so new to the blogging world, I thought that was just standard to leave a message. I hate it too...major pain. I am not sure how to turn that off or I would on mine. I am with Dante on moderating the comments, not against people that use that, but if someone leaves something to harsh, there is always a trash can.

I think most people just don't know how to turn it off; it's a blogger default setting (as you know, Mewow, since yours is obviously turned off, thank god! :)).

I don't like it either; it's a huge pain.

As for spam comments, they are very infrequent and easy to delete if you choose.

For anyone who reads this, has Blogger and doesn't know how to turn off word verification, go to your blogger page, choose "settings" choose "comments" scroll down to the word verification setting and choose "no". Simple.

Thanks Meow! :)

I assumed the word verification was some sort of security measure to make sure the person posting wasn't a hacked computer or something.

I didn't realize so many ppl didn't like the moderated comments. I think I might turn it off. I turned it on only so that I would see that a comment was left on the dashboard (laziness is a curse of mine). And I check my blog a few times a day so that there isn't a post sitting there for days on end waiting for me.

Dante had very good points...gave me a few things to think about....

Thanks for posting this today Meow!

Iteresting. I also really dislike the word verification thing. It's a nuisense as is the 2nd click to get to a blog that is for some reason adult rated...what, kids are going to see that warning and go away? As to the moderated comments, well mine are. I chose to do that in the beginning because frankly, I was very new to the cyber world and it seems somehow to offer me some control and protection. Personally, I have a philosophy to post any comment that is sane and unoffensive, whether it is positive or negative, whether I am in agreement or not. I don't often have to hit delete, but it has happened a number of times. There are some pretty gross and unstable people out there, and the anonymity of the Internet seems to attract them. I have been propositioned, damned to hell, and otherwise aggravated, and frankly, have thought of it as a way to not only protect myself, but my readers from that kind of negative garbage! I don't like it going to print at all.

Now for my 2 cents. I have comment moderation but once you are approved you are always approved (so use your power for good and now evil). I have also had some terrible comments directed at my hubby and myself, calling him a child molester and saying that I must allow it. I was glad to be able to delete them at once with out anyone seeing them. I have also had the offer to exchange links that lead to a pay site that is way over the top for me. I have had well over 100 spam comments too, thank goodness for akismet! I don't think I need anymore offers to see famous people naked. I do wish that bloggers that use word verification could set it so that once you are approved you are always approved. I don't actually see very well and sometimes it will take me three or four tries to get it right. But enough of my rant, thanks for letting me join in! Meow, I hope you are feeling better now too. And I have checked out Lash's blog and will be adding him to our list.

Sara, I don't have a problem with bloggers using comment moderation. It's their choice and unless they check their blogs several times a day, things can slip through that they might not want everyone to see. This hasn't happened to me yet, but I suppose it could in the future. I'll deal with it then, I guess. Sorry to hear that it's been a problem for you! I use the adult warning because on Blogger, people can flag your blog as having objectionable content and Blogger will investigate (I think). By doing the second click, they state that they already know it contains adult content. I guess it's for my protection from over zealous Blogger censors. Meow

~N, I've noticed that sometimes my comments are posted immediately even though comment moderation is indicated on a blog. Now I know why. I'm not sure if this is available on Blogger or only on Wordpress. And I'm not sure how this would work for word verification on Blogger since I don't use it. I'm assuming that Blogger and Wordpress have different controls and settings. Meow
